We went to kara last night and all we got was this pony

Congratulations to Feathergrass in our guild, who may be one of the very few on the server to have the illustrius Attumen's mount from Karazhan. I've been in kara literally hundreds of times and never seen the mount drop, so this is very exciting and indicative that these mounts are now farmable.

High level crafting in Wraith

Crafting is both good and bad in Wraith. Good for everyone else, bad for the crafter. You see, it all has to do with what you can get out of your profession. Well, they have some okay green crafting gear that will help you as you level, and some intro 80 blue gear, and intro PVP blue gear that's craftable. However, there are many issues with crafting as it is. Mainly its the fact that the good stuff doesn't require a rep grind like in BC. For example, the leg enchants are trainer learned. Everyone learns it, everyone makes some to level up. Result? Plethora in AH, and loss of easily 50% of your material price.

Enchants can now be sold on AH. Result? You lose half of your material cost to make the scroll (which the vellum goes for 10x more than the material cost). This is the same on two servers, so it may be universal.

The sad fact is that for right now, the thing to do is sell your materials and don't try to level your craft. And there is no reason at all to level it beyond the self-buffs such as the ring enchant and bracer LW enchant. Crafters will actually pay you for those critical 425+ skill enchants, and every self-respecting crafter will be leveling their craft to help their guild/raid out. So don't be a chump, don't level it right now, and enjoy the insane profits. 50-60g from a 10g AH item? You bet! 20g per stack of northend leather? That's cheap! (Especially since you will need thousands to level to 450).

The only silver lining is to figure out which enchants/crafted items there aren't a ton of on the AH and provide those, but I don't see making much profit off it. Sure you make make some gold of the PVP gear, but considering the investment cost, i doubt it's worth it. It has to do with opporunity cost, if the cost is literally a mouse click then you can be sure that the item to be sold will never cost more than the materials.

Update: Fara makes the excellent point that you will need ~375 enchant to DE up to level 80 epics. So it's worth it to keep enchanting for that reason alone. Of course, you'd be insane to drop something and pick up enchanting just so you can DE your northend greens.

You know what else is interesting? Tailoring is the only crafting prof that doesn't require it's raw material to be from another gathering profession. This makes it the only crafting profession that you don't need to hit up the AH for to powerlevel, and further you can easily accomidate another profession like enchanting to pair with it.

Five holiday season gift ideas for your friends or signficant other

http://www.a-plasticbags.com/images/christmas-gift-bags.jpg

Happy holidays!

Gift exchange and secret Santa are in full swing down here in my company. To get into the holiday spirit I made this mini guide on my five top picks of the great in game gifts you can give to your friends or significant other.

Be warned that some of these items are pretty expensive or take significant amount of time investment to obtain. With this said this is a great way to show that in game special someone you care a lot about him/her.

  1. Tranquil Mechanical Yeti
This is a rare none combat pet made by engineer. In my opinion this is one of the coolest looking none combat pet in the game. The recipe needed to him is not straight forward to obtain and the material necessary to make one is pretty rare as well. If you are not lucky enough to pick one up from the auction house you will need to spam the trade channel and look for an engineer with this pattern. Either way it is likely to cost you in the neighborhood of between 50-100 GP.
  2. Gnomish Army Knife
This is a great stocking stuffer for all the MacGuyer lovers. The Swiss Gnomish army knife can be used as a Gyromatic Micro-Adjuster, a Arclight Spanner, a Flint and Tinder box, a Blacksmithing Hammer, a Mining Pick, or a Skinning Knife. It is cute, cheap and easily available. Made by engineer but not bind on pickup. You can pick this up from the auction house for as little as a few gold piece.
  3. Mana Wyrmling
This is one beautiful none combat pet! This little guy makes a perfect gift for any occasion. It is fair rarely seen in game because of the obscurity of the seller. This little guy also earns distinction as the most expesnive none combat pet money can buy. Costing a pretty 40 gp from Dealer Rashaad in netherstorm. Show some one how special he/she is by leaving this pet under his/her virtual Christmas tree.
  4. Delicious Chocolate Cake
A gift of gifts. This delicious chocolate cake is made by master cooks using a rare outland cooking recipe. If your special someone spend 5 secs eating this, he/she will become Very Happy for 1.00 hour. Romantic lore commonly identifies chocolate as an aphrodisiac. Wonder if this works virtually as well as in real life.
  5. Green Winter Clothes (for alliance) or Red Winter Clothes (for horde)
If all else fail. Shirt/tie has been a old standbys for millions gift givers. If you can't get hold of any of the above items you should consider pick up a wonderfully set of beautiful winter cloth. Just make sure you pickup the version that is not commonly available for your fraction (this means red for the horde and green for the alliance). The only way for a tailor to get the recipe not commonly available for his/her fraction is by venturing into enemy capital under PvP fire. Although you may not have to die to get the cloth your wallet will surely feel the pinch. On my server this will set you back between 30-60 GP.
After you get your gift(s) of choice don't forget to obtain some ribboned wrapping paper to propely prepare your gift before mailing.

I hope you had fun with this mini guide. If you additional suggestion please drop me a line!

Happy holidays!

First commenters to my blog

http://boingboing.net/images/DSC01343blogger_lg.jpg
The author of the blog "One Among Many" had an interesting blogging idea:

"Here's the idea: Go back to your first few posts. Who was the first person to EVER comment on your blog? Call them out, link that post and thank them! Then tag a few folks to see who they call out."

A bunch of bloggers have answered her call with his/her own posting. Here is my entry.

  1. First blog commenter: Gibbiex
Comment left on Nov 9th, 2007 on my post of some screen shots I made in game. Gibbie(Gibster, Gibear) is my IRL best friend. He got me started playing WOW and blogging about it. Although I didn't take his lead of playing a hunter or start an alliance character we still blog and play together today. These days while continue to blog on his own blog "hunter's prowl" he also contribute regularly to this blog. Thanks bud!

  2. First blog sphere friend: Pike (None other than the author of Aspect of the Hare)
She left her comment on my blog entry on "Wolrd of Warcraft terminology" on Dec 14th, 2007. Pike is one of those geniune American girl everyone likes. Another blogger who has never been moved off my favorite's list.

  3. Another of my prolifc blogger commenter: One Among Many
Caitlin from One Among Many is another blogger I keep an close eye. She is a prolific blogger and visitor to my site. I was sadened when she quit WOW/blogging a while back this year. Rejoice! She has returned to both WOW and her WOW blogging with a vengence! Thank you for continuingly to keep us entertained!

  4. Shout outs to other WOW bloggers (in no particular order) who keep me entertained during queue time:
    Kestrel's Aerie
    Light's Vengeance
    Creeping
    Mania's Arcania
    A Dwarf Priest
    Airee.net
    Points of Convergence
    World of Matticus
    Resto4LIFE
Other thoughts: I just noticed my site meter has rolled over 30,000 past weekend (or since I started to use site meter). I never thought there would be so many people interested in my unorganized thoughts and broken English.

A big thank you goes to all of my readers at this Holiday season! It has been a fun ride for me.

Feel free to tag me and leave me an comment!

Happy holidays!

Happy holidays!

One of my talented guild mate drew this and posted on our guild portal. She is such a wonderful artist and the painting is completely delightful!

Because she owns the copywrite to this painting you may only link to this post but may not copy and post this picture elsewhere without her permission. Her character name is Deekomposin on realm dawnbringer if you are interested in getting a hold of her.

Easy to get gears for a leveling holy priest (level 70-74)

In a previous post I detailed my build and glyph choices for a leveling DPS/holy priest in northrend. In this post I will tell you about my choices of gears for him from level 70 to level 74.

I did not raid much during BC so most my gears are either quest blues or from special events like the scourge invasion and Halloween quests. Unlike the raiding holy priests who have T5-T6 gears and aren't expect to completely upgrade their garbs until level 78-80. I found almost everything in northrend was a comparable upgrade for my priest. With this said I still kept a few pieces of BC purples such as the mooncloth set for healing as the MP5 on these items are superior than most of the below DPS items.

All items listed here are blue. I found these to be easily obtainable without extraordinary efforts. However a few of these are drop items from instance bosses may require multiple instance runs to obtain.

  1. Chest:
Mystic Frostwoven Robe, available at level 74, this is a tailor made BoE blue. If you are not a tailor you can buy this off AH, cost between 60-100 gp
  2. Head:
Reinforced Velvet Helm, drop from Prince Keleseth in Utgarde keep. Requires level 70 to wear.
  3. Hand:
Gloves of Banished Infliction, available at level 74. This is an reward for the quest Don't Forget the Eggs! in the instance Azjol-Nerub
  4. Waist:
Wrap of Vigorous Destruction, reward for the group quest Sarathstra, Scourge of the North group quest in Dragonblight. The quest is level 75(group) but you can get it earlier if you find a willing group to run this with you. THere is no level requirement for equiping this.
  5. Feet:
Exquisite Spider-Silk Footwraps, available at level 74. This item drops off Krik'thir the Gatewatcher who is the first boss in the instance Azjol-Nerbu.
Attuned Crystalline Boots, drops off Keristrasza from the Nexus, drop rate is 34% and requires level 71 to use.
  6. Ring:
Ring of Decimation, quest reward for Ingvar Must Die! in Utgarde keep. The quest is level 71 but you can get the quest as early as level 68. There is no level requirement for equiping this.
  7. Neck:
Necklace of Calm Skies, quest reward for Disarmament in Utgarde keep. The quest is level 71 but you can get the quest as early as level 68. There is no level requirement for equiping this.
  8. Shoulder:
Mystic Frostwoven Shoulders, available at level 73, this is a tailor made BoE blue. If you are not a
tailor you can buy this off AH, cost about 100 gp on my server.
  9. Cloak:
Cloak of the Moon, available at level 74, this is a tailor made BoE blue. If you are not a tialor you can buy this off AH, cost about 100 gp on mine.
  10. Wrist:
Wraps of the San'Layn, quest rward for A Score to Settle in Utgarde keep. The quest is level 71 but you can get the quest as early as level 68. There is no level requirement for equiping this.
  11. Weapon:
Life-Staff of the Web Lair, drops off Hadronox or the second boss from Azjol-Nerub. The drop rate is 34% which means this may take a few runs to get.
  12. Wand:
Wand of Shimmering Scales, drops off Grand Magus Telestra in The Nexus. The drop rate is 35% which means this may take a few runs to get.
  13. Trinkets:
Horn of the Herald, quest reward for Return to Atuik in Holwing Fjord. You get to choose between a DPS or a MP5 trinket for this quest. There is another quest reward called Sailor's Kotted Charm from a quest called The Jig is Up in Howling Fjord which offers identical sets of rewards. You can elect to take one DPS, one MP5, two MP5 or two DPS trinket. I see advantages in any configuration. Personally I took 1 DPS 1 MP5.

Ritual of summoning now creates a summoning stone

So I'm browsing through the new patch notes (3.0.8 which is on PTR now). Folks, there are a ton of as yet unpublized data in there. For example, bear mangle is being nerfed.

However, this caught my eye.

Ritual of Summoning Will now create a summoning portal object which can be re-used for multiple summons for 5 minutes.
Holy cow, does anyone realize what that means? It means I only need one soulshard to get a whole non-attuned raid into any raid, and the summoning won't take half an hour. Molten Core, I can't wait!

Addon spotlight - Qbar

Not sure how I found this addon, but here's QBar.

It's extremely simple, it adds another hotbar of all usable quest items to your UI. No longer do you have to search through your bags to figure out what you are supposed to click. I love it, it's very win. It does one thing and does it well. You can customize the bar with the /qb command, the one to unlock it so you can move it is "/qb lock". (Thanks for confirmation!)

Old world dungeon changes in next patch

We've made some changes to several dungeons to allow easier access for players in the upcoming patch.

The ritual objects that used to require 3 players to activate in Blackrock Spire and Uldaman now only require 1.
You no longer need quintessence to summon Majordomo Executus.
You no longer need the Scepter of Celebras to teleport to the final section of Maraudon.
You no longer need the Mallet of Zul'Farrak to summon Gahz'rilla.
Nightbane is also being made accessible without the urn.

So...you can now solo just about everything. Not sure if this is good or bad. Certainly opens these instances up a bit more. I like the fact that we no longer have to do the quests to get these items (I never did get the urn due to it requiring two heroics, and someone always had it on them).

Anyway i'm looking very much forward to revisiting the old content. We can probably do just about everything at 60 with a 5 man group that is in the mid 70s.

Old-world Attunements

Molten core attunement (40man):
This is actually pretty simple, run a BRD 5-man. However, you need the Shadowforged key - which is easily obtained by:
#1 killing yourself
#2 talk to the quest giver near the BRD summoning stone
#3 killing a boss in BRD
#4 then he'll give you the key! At that point you can access all of BRD and get through to the core. You can easily do both of these in one shot.

Blackrock spire attunment (10man).
This is a bit more involved. First, buy a unadorned seal of ascension off AH, or farm mobs near BRS for it. Then go into LBRS (lower BRS - 5 man level 60), do a quest involving killing a boss therein. Not done yet! Go kill a mob in duskwallow marsh, go back to LBRS, turn in quest. Finally you have your key.

BWL (Blackwing Lair - 40 man in Blackrock mountain)

Not many saw BWL. Attunement is straightforward. Kill a mob in UBRS, get his drop (Blackhand's Command), this starts a quest to go to the end of LBRS and touch a brand. Bingo, you are attuned. Apparently you still have to run UBRS to get into BWL though.

Update: You don't have to go through UBRS after attunement, the portal is located at the entrance.

AQ20 and AQ40. (20/40 man)

No attunement! A massive server event was created instead to act as attunement. This was done years ago.

Onyxia (40 man)

Attunement dropped. This was a long quest chain involving BRD and some other stuff. Cool quest by the looks of it. Now it's nerfed.

Zul'Grub (20 man)

No attunement! Never was, apparently.

Taking it old-school - Hunters Unite

This is a truly awesome post about the uberness of hunterdome. It involves two Hunters (probably BM) at level 80, and ZulGrub. They were able to down several bosses, and called upon a third hunter to get down another boss. Go read it! Sholva (one of the hunters) is dressed in T6/Northend blues. I assume the others are similiarly geared.

My real question is what composition of people would it take to run ZG and other instances? One issue is that attunement for level 60 raids is such a pain. Sure ony attunement is no more, but BRS, MC, AQ are. My thoughts are to get attunements on my lock and get two others to run the attunement proecess with me (Fara, Tapati, I'm looking at you). Then we can port in everyone else who isn't attuned thanks to the handy lock summoning.

Crafting, should we stay or go?

Kaliope, Faradhim, and Resto4Life all make good points regarding the choice of crafting professions in Wraith. To summerize briefly, fara makes the good point that since everything is BOE now, there isn't a need to grind up to top levels. Resto compares/contrasts LW/tailoring and makes the point that LW requires a secondary profession while tailoring doesn't. There are merits to both professions and I'll just point you to that post, but again no BOP stuff at the end (450). Kaliope argues that one needs to examine the gear available for pre-raid people (and mentions that much of the best-in-slot stuff is available from rep grinds). Then there is the arguement that you could just buy the epic for 5000g and be done with it (this was in the Resto4life comments).

I may actually ditch LW on my druid, due to this. It will be extremely expensive to buy out the necessary skins (some 1500 I believe), and I don't have a skinner alt on this server (my wife does however). The bracer buff is great. That plus the enchanting ring buff gives me two very nice bonuses to my gear. On the other hand I'm almost 77 and just now getting rid of my 3 piece epic LW set (Windhawk). They have served incredibly well (shockingly well) for leveling and its just one less thing to worry about while leveling.

However these are the benefits to LW that we are neglecting.
1) You can disenchant your greens, so the money is not wasted. Maybe you will break even selling the enchanting mats, maybe not. But you should get enough mats to get through much of enchanting grind. (that plus the ridiculous amounts of greens I'm getting from questing).
2) We dont know what will drop in the future. The main reason I picked up LW was that there was some awesome stuff that only dropped in instances and raids and the recipe was BOP. Particularly in T5/T6, (esp T6), there are recipes that cost stuff that drops in the raid and can be obtained from raiding, and are of that tier equiv, so you don't have to wait on a chance drop).
3) Fun. Lets not forget that crafting is another component of the game. I personally dont want to be done w/ the game, having everything maxed out on my char. That means the game is over and that's not fun. So crafting is another time/gold sink that I'll do willingly just because it's another fun part of the game.
4) Gold. Yes all crafting is a gold sink. At best you will break even. But do you need the gold? If you have an epic flyer you could argue that you don't really need alot of gold, even if raiding. But for some accumulation of gold is a goal in itself. Not me, i'm glad to have a few thousand gold so i can buy things, but otherwise i'm content to have a cash flow.

If i were to sum up my thoughts, its that crafting is already a huge investment, and the expansion isn't done by a long shot. We know the dev's don't intend to have any more BOP stuff, but you can bet that there will be alot more BOP recipes (a source of potential gold). Lastly it's a fun part of the game and a nice time sink for which there are easy tangible rewards.

17 easy to get horde pets for achievement

One of achievement lines in WOTLK is the collection of small companion pets. While reaching 25 and 50 pets are no easy tasks getting 15 pets is well within most player's reach with a high level character and some traveling.

This article will give you locations and contacts of 17 easy to get pets for a horde character.

  1. Cockroach from Jeremiah Payson in Undercity or Dealer Rashaad in Netherstorm
  2. Black Kingsnake,Brown Snake, Crimson Snake from Xan'tish in Orgrimmar
  3. Ancona Chicken from Magus Tirth in Thounsand Needles
  4. Prairie Dog Whistle from Halpa in Thunder Bluff
  5. Tree Frog Box and Wood Frog Box from Flik at Darkmoon Faire
  6. Parrot Cage (Cockatiel) and Parrot Cage (Senegal) from Narkk in the Old Port Authority build of Booty bay
  7. Blue Dragonhawk Hatchling,Brown Rabbit Crate, Mana Wyrmling, Red Moth Egg from Dealer Rashaad at stormspire netherstorm.
  8. Golden Dragonhawk Hatchling, Red Dragonhawk Hatchling,
Silver Dragonhawk Hatchling from Jilanne in Eversong Woods.

Money and crafting in Northend

I am wondering what other crafters feel about the money situation in northend. I've been keeping a close eye on my finances, and found that generally I'm on track to make about 1000g by 77. The new training and flightpoints are really expensive and these expenses add up quickly. Just by vendoring every grey and doing the quests, however, I've had enough funds to be comfortable if not exactly wealthy (mount ain't gonna pay for itself). I've seen alot of 80s coming back and doing quests with me, so my sense is that the quests become fairly profitable at 80, especially if you are an enchanter and can sell the mats (I probably have 1000g in mats saved up for leveling).

As for leather/tailoring, I can't say much, but northend cloth is going for 2.5 gold each (not each stack, each), so I would imagine that tailors will pretty much have to gather mats themselves (for this reason i haven't leveled first aid past 375)

BS seems a bit more desireable now, I've seen linked several non-warrior type epic weapons that BSs can make. That plus the abundance of cobalt should help BSs. But i've never played one, so what do I know.

2 fast 2 ferious, faradhim's leveling holy priest build in northrend

PATCH 3.1 HAS BEEN RELEASED. INFORMATION IN THIS POST IS NOW OUT-DATED.

IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR MY 3.1 RAIDING SPEC CLICK HERE.

OTHER WISE STAY TUNED FOR ANOTHER POST REGARDING 3.1 HOLY LEVELING SPEC.

My priest is the my last character I bought into northrend. Both my warrior and my hunter have advanced further in the icy north although priest is my main. One reason for the lag is because of my pre-conceived notion that leveling as a holy build in northrend would be painful and unbearable. I toyed with going to shadow for leveling but ultimately decided to give holy DPS another chance. Now I am a few levels into northrend and I have been pleasantly surprised by his ability to hold his own.

Northrend leveling with a holy priest is not only possible but can be pretty enjoyable. My priest is no hunter but my DPS is only about 5% shy of hers at the same level. Here is a brief recap on what I did for leveling as holy DPS in northrend. He can't do AOE and good crowd control but the DPS is every bit as efficient as my hunter and my warrior.

Priest Talents(at level 70)

Discipline Talents - 17 point(s)

  • Twin Disciplines - rank 5/5
  • Improved Inner Fire - rank 3/3
  • Improved Power Word: Fortitude - rank 2/2
  • Improved Power Word: Shield - rank 3/3
  • Inner Focus - rank 1/1
  • Meditation - rank 3/3

  • Holy Talents - 41 point(s)

  • Improved Renew - rank 3/3
  • Holy Specialization - rank 4/5
  • Divine Fury - rank 5/5
  • Inspiration - rank 3/3
  • Holy Reach - rank 2/2
  • Improved Healing - rank 3/3
  • Searing Light - rank 2/2
  • Spirit of Redemption - rank 1/1
  • Spiritual Guidance - rank 5/5
  • Surge of Light - rank 2/2
  • Spiritual Healing - rank 5/5
  • Holy Concentration - rank 3/3
  • Empowered Healing - rank 3/5

  • Shadow Talents - 3 point(s)

  • Spirit Tap - rank 3/3

  • Talent point distribution from 71-80
At level 71-72; take Empowered Healing - rank 3/5, rank 4/5
At level 73, take Circle of healing - rank 1/1
    At level 74-76, take Serendipity - rank 1/3, rank 2/3, rank 3/3
At level 77-79, take Test of Faith - rank 1/3, rank 2/3, rank 3/3
At level 80, take Guardian Spirit - rank 1/1 or you could respec to a traditional raid healing build.

The end result looks like this:

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

My talents is spread between three trees. This build is similar to a raid heal build with a couple differences. I will review the difference from a raid heal build and why I speced it that way.

    1. Shadow Tree:
3 points were spent in shadow tree for Spirit Tap. During leveling Spirit Tap is critical as it gives much needed mana regeneration boost after each kill.
    2. Disc Tree:
At tier 2 I took Improved Inner Fire over Silent Resolve. I did this because improved DPS generation of the new Inner Fire provides. I also found that most AOE tanks now generate enough threats wherebyI am okay healing them without Silent Resolve. On Tier 3 I took 3/3 Improved Power Word:Shield. IMHO this is a worthy investment for a solo priest as your only protection is your shield. To make its mileage go further I am stacking a Power Word:Shield glyph on top. The glyph gives extra shield time and provides a small boost to heal when casted.
    3. Holy Tree:
I took 2/2 Searing Light, 2/2 Surge of Light, 2/2 Holy Reach which is not always common in a raid holy priest build. These points are used to buff my damage generation of the Smite Spell. The rest of the talent selections are more in line with a cookie cutter raid priest.

    Priest Gylphs

    Major Gylphs:
    Glyph of Smite; Glyph of Power Word: Shield;

    Minor Gylphs:
Glyph of Shackle Undead; Glyph of Levitate; Glyph of Fading

Glyph of smite is a god sent for any solo leveling priest. I noticed having vs not having has huge affects on amount of spell disruption you will experience. Less knock back means better over all DPS. Glyph of Power Word: Shield like I noted above will increase your protection time while provide small amount of heal. If you enough money you can buy sets of healing glyphs and DPS glyphs and swap them in and out as needed. Doing this however can get expensive. For most part I will simply uses the Smiter Glyph.

The minor glyphs are mostly cosmetic can be customized depending on playing style. Glyph of Levitate will remove the reagent requirement thereby saves a bag slot. Glyph of Fading will decrease amount of mana required when casted. But if you find yourself fading all the time you may need to find a new tank.

    DPS rotation

The preferred way is to engage mobs one at time and from distance. Before entering combat make sure your Power Word: Fortitude and Inner Fire are up. Start by casting powerword:shield(PW:S). At maximum combat range pull mob with Holy Fire. Because of holy reach you should be well outside the aggro radius of the said mob. While mob is running toward you cast Shadow Word: Pain followed by rotations of Smite. When mob drops within 1000 HPs cast Shadow Word: Death. Alternatively you can finish off a mob's few hundred HP by using your wand. Almost always your mob will be dead before your Shadow Word: Pain runs out. Same level mob general will take 3-4 rounds of Smite before drop. You will recover significant amount of mana with Spirit Tap which lasts 15 secs. Without this said I am always not patient enough to wait for that long before I charge into the next combat.

    Some other random thoughts

When dealing with multiple mobs it is important to keep your Shadow Word: Pain on all of them. If are taking hits from multiple mobs your shield won't be up 100% of the time. Apply your only crowd control ability Psychic Scream carefully. Feared mobs is likely to bring back additional friends which will only make things worse. If you can't shield because of the cool down you may want to cast Renew and Flash Heal on yourself and buy time. If your mana runs low don't forget to use your Shadowfiend. Also don't feel bad to run. If you are being hit by multiple mobs with little chance of surviving, toss out your Psychic Scream and run like a mad man. Since you are a healer you should use your ability to heal to your advantage. Before long fights always pre-preemptively start a Renew. If your health goes critical don't be afraid to use great heals. Unlike a hunter or a warrior, priest has no panic button so detailed mana/health management is needed at all times.

Also it is helpful to have 2 sets of gear. One set for DPSing (solo) and one set for healing. The new spell power had helped a great deal but it always better to have a MP5 set for instance healing and a +Spell Power set/+Spirit set for farming and questing.
